The latest online mobile sensation is Summoners War from Com2uS, and we’re quickly becoming hopelessly addicted. Summoners War is a fantasy roleplaying game for iOS and Android devices that puts you in charge of an army of monsters on a floating island. You’ll join a collective of other Summoners who do battle with wild monsters, as well as one another. It’s not perfect, but Summoners War comes closer to nailing the freemium model than anything we’ve ever seen before.
Summoners War Review
You begin the game being guided by Ellia, a young woman who is also a Summoner. She’ll guide you through the scenarios that make up the game’s main storyline. Story isn’t exactly this game’s strong suit, but what it lacks in clever writing, it makes up for in charm and graphics. Your mission is essentially to summon as many monsters as you can, build a powerful team, and dominate the Arena, where Summoners work out their differences with each other. These Summoners are mostly fighting over rare Mana Crystals, which are both valuable and powerful. You’ll go on many quests through the world to train your monsters and gather more resources.
Monsters can take many forms, from slight fairies to gigantic fiery golems, and all of them have unique abilities that can turn the tide of battle in your favor. Everyone starts the game with one monster each in all three main attributes: fire, water, and air. As you progress, you’ll gather more of these monsters, along with light and dark ones too, and evolve them into more powerful forms. The game is more than a little bit like Pokemon in its concept, but in execution, Summoners War is entirely its own beast.
You’ll have to deal with the usual freemium problems like energy and premium currency, of course, but both those things are much more readily available in Summoners War than in others like Greed for Glory. Whether you’re looking for something fun to sink lots of time into or just something to soak up some downtime at work, Summoners War will leave you excited to play more every time.
